Title: Efficient Classrooms Driven by Information Gap: Theorizing and Implementing the Exhaustive Teaching Method

Abstract: How can teachers avoid wasting classroom time by reiterating what students already know? How can instructors quickly identify students’ prior knowledge and pinpoint existing information gaps, then efficiently bridge those gaps while continuously advancing and innovating—thereby enabling students to rapidly reach the teacher’s level of understanding? This paper presents the “Exhaustive Teaching Method,” a pedagogical approach the author has refined through years of practice. Aligned with the elicitive nature of education, this method is highly open-ended, practice-oriented, challenging, and interactive, yielding remarkable results in both daily instruction and public demonstration lessons. Using the treatment of the concept of “thinness” in the pre- and post-revised versions of the unit Looking Good, Feeling Good from the Yilin Oxford High School English textbook (Book 1) as a case study, the paper illustrates a three-tiered instructional progression coupled with dual reinforcement strategies. First, through interactive and challenging activities, students’ existing knowledge is deliberately “exhausted.” Next, new knowledge is introduced and exhausted at three successive levels: the teacher’s perspective, disciplinary insights, and scholarly consensus. Finally, learning is consolidated through two layers of follow-up—passive retention and active application—creating a closed-loop system that ensures both effective gap-filling and high instructional efficacy.
