Title: Pain and Glory: A Study of the Body Narrative in “There Is a Star Named Nan Rendong in the Sky

Abstract: There Is a Star Named Nan Rendong in the Sky” is a reportage piece newly included in the first volume of the eighth-grade Chinese language textbook compiled by the Ministry of Education for the autumn semester of 2025 (Wang Hongjia, 2025). It tells the moving story of Nan Rendong, the chief scientist of China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). This paper adopts the theoretical perspective of body narratology, focusing on the dimension of body writing in the text and examining how it constructs the image of Nan Rendong as a “scientific hero” through body narrative. The author argues that the text breaks away from the traditional tendency in scientist narratives to emphasize “spirit” over “body,” concretizing the abstract spirit of scientists into tangible bodily experiences. The body narrative in the text collectively completes the narrative transformation from “pain” to “glory.” The finitude of the body and the infinitude of the spirit achieve a dialectical unity through body writing, rendering Nan Rendong’s image both sublime and relatable. This paper aims to provide a path of bodily criticism for interpreting newly added textbook content, exploring its unique value in educating students about the spirit of scientists.
